Event Description
One of the responsibilities of Brighton and Hove County Council is the collection and disposal of household waste. Last century, there was minimal separation of waste with virtually all going to landfill and indeed in 2000 our city produced 112,000 tonnes of rubbish of which only 10% was recycled. Councillor Tim Rowkins leads the Council's waste collection service and will take us on the historical journey of waste and recycling and what our plans are for the future. This will be an illuminating talk highlighting the constraints the council has to work under, how social attitudes to recycling are changing, and how recycling technology is helping us create a better environment.
Presenter
Councillor Tim Rowkins is Deputy Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council and serves as Cabinet Member for Net Zero & Environmental Services. In this role, he leads the city’s work on climate action, decarbonisation and the transition to a circular economy, alongside responsibility for waste, recycling, street cleansing and public toilets.
He has played a central role in developing and delivering major initiatives to improve recycling, introduce citywide food waste collections, refurbish and reopen the city’s public toilets and accelerate investment in low-carbon infrastructure and nature recovery. Alongside his cabinet responsibilities, he represents Hanover & Elm Grove ward and works closely with residents and local partners to improve neighbourhood services and deliver practical, place-based solutions.
