Mary has been carrying out research into nineteenth century poverty in Sussex for several years; initially for an MA and more recently for a PhD. For her MA dissertation Mary compared relief in the downland parish of Rottingdean with relief in Chiddingly in the Weald, (see Sussex Archaeological Collections Vol. 155).  Her PhD includes research into sixteen parishes in the Weald, on the Downs and in Lewes.
