Emily Jolley

Emily Jolley studied Fine Art at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne and is now an accomplished watercolourist, working in the medium for over 20 years.

After graduating she migrated south having won a sponsored studio in Artspace, Portsmouth. She now works in a Phoenix studio in Brighton, also teaching in and around Brighton and local areas.

Her work has several recurring themes that she enjoys. One of her interests is in the natural world which she has explored through a series of exhibitions covering walks on and around Mount Caburn, Cissbury Ring and The River Adur.

Her previous solo exhibition was at Phoenix Artspace where she showed a series of works exploring the overlooked landscapes seen from a moving car, ‘The Road Series’. This is an examination of the dramatic and ephemeral landscape that as drivers and passengers we don’t often see or remember. The paintings are realised from glimpsed moments on long journeys, photographed for her by her son. The paintings capture the feel and rhythm of the traffic, the changing shapes, colours, the headlights, brake-lights, the punctuation of overpasses, junctions and traffic signs.

In all her work she enjoys exploring and pushing the medium of paint. Emily is an experienced watercolour teacher teaching regularly in Brighton, on-site in  Sussex Prairies and also organising an annual watercolour holiday experience on the Greek island of Kalymnos.
