An Introduction to Medieval and Renaissance Music*

The first ten weeks of the course wil focus on the Medieval period. This marked the beginning of the 'Western Art Music' tradition. General topics will include Plainchant, Troubadours, Trouveres, Minnesingers, Instrumental music and the Medieval motet. The second half of the course will examine the Renaissance a period of ferment and change in all the arts. Specific composers played and discussed will include Lassus, Palestrina, Vittoria, Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, among others. General topics will include the Mass, Motet, Madrigal, solo song, consort music and solo instrumental music. No previous musical knowledge or music literacy is required to participate.
