This new course will be both a fascinating and an informative account of the bitter and often bloody struggle that accompanied the foundation of Britian's American colonies and the eventual emergence of an independent United States by the end of the Eighteenth century. One of the contemporary figures to be studied during the course will be Thomas Paine, who lived for a while in Lewes and who died 200 years ago this year and whose writings such as 'Common Sense' helped to fuel the American Revolution. |

Byzantium was a thousand-year-long civilization, which influenced all the countries of the eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and Western Europe throughtout the Middle Ages. The birth and development of Constantinople with its grandeur at the centre of its vast empire will be examined. Not only will the course look at the early history and the rise of Christanity, but also that of the period of Iconoclasm, the Crusades and the rise of Islam. We will also look at the archaeology of Byzantium - its palaces, cities,churches,and monastries as well as its fabulous architecture. |

This course begins by exploring the relationship between the concept of Primitivism and the interests of avant garde artists working around the turn of the century. The course then examines the development of Cubism. This leads then to the move towards Abstraction. Again there is a need to examine the historical context and the background of the Great War. This leads to an examination to the responses by artist of the war, and the apparently competing avant garde of Dada, Surrealism and Purism. There will be a gallery visit to Tate Modern where many of these works will be examined at first hand. This course will be well illustrated with slides and videos. |

1500hrs to 1630hrs Intermediate The assumes basic knowledge of the langauge obtained through the completion of a beginners or similar course. It seeks to extend that knowledge into a more formal understanding of the language, including reading and writing skills. |
